Photoshop Tips Main

This effect can only be added to a Bevel and Emboss effect. You can’t choose it without first choosing one of those. It adds tones to your layer’s content by using the luminosity (black and white) tones of the patterns from the Patterns presets. It does not affect the color of the layer to which it is applied.
There are only a few options in its dialog box, but they are interesting ones. The Depth setting can make a lot of difference in the how a texture looks.

For comparison purposes, this is the example image used below, shown with the effect applied with an Inner Bevel, and all default settings. The default texture shown is Bubbles.

  • Pattern - Click on either the thumbnail, or the little tiny down arrow to its right to access the pattern presets. Once you have chosen a pattern, you can drag in the image to change what part of the pattern is visible within the outlines of your layer’s content. The cursor will look like this.
    Move pattern cursor
You can load additional patterns by going to that pop-up palette’s menu and choosing Patterns2.pat.
  • New Preset - Doesn’t have a name listed, but the little button with a page icon on it to the right of the patterns can be clicked to save your settings as a new Style.
  • Snap to Origin - If you have the Link with Layer option checked, then clicking on this button causes the pattern to snap to the upper left corner of the layer. If Link with Layer is not checked, clicking this button will cause the pattern to align with the documents upper left corner. After changing the Link with Layer setting, you have to click the button again to get the pattern to snap.
  • Scale - Makes the pattern ingredients larger or smaller. In the example below, I have reduced the scale from 100 to 30.
    Scale 30
  • Depth - Increases the contrast in the pattern which causes it to look bumpier. In the example below, I have changed the depth setting to +1000.
    Depth 1000
  • Invert - Reverses the direction of the bumps. Dark becomes light, and vice versa. The same effect can be had by entering a negative value in the Depth setting.
  • Link with Layer - Locks the pattern to the layer so that if you move, or transform it, the pattern will not be left behind.
Here are examples of two different textures. The first one is Satin.

And, the second one is Molecular. Both are from the default patterns set.
