Brushes in 7

page five
The last tab, Other Dynamics, has sliders for Opacity and Flow Jitter as well as the Control menus for both of these features. Remember that Control affects all application of opacity and flow not just jitter.
Note that the Opacity and Flow settings on an individual tool’s options bar will limit anything generated by the Jitter settings in Other Dynamics. The options bar settings cannot be exceeded.
Below is an example of what you get with an Opacity Jitter setting of 100 %. As with the examples in Color Dynamics, I set brush spacing to 100 %. The brush color was green. I painted over red stripes so you could see the opacity shift.

And here is Flow Jitter set to 100 %. Flow sets the speed at which paint is applied. You can set the flow rate on your tool's options bar. It is usually used with the airbrush setting at less than 100 % (50 % flow is a good for an airbrush).

The portion of an options bar shown above is included to show you how the presets in the new Tool Presets palette differ from presets in the Brushes palette.
All of the settings on the paintbrush options bar shown were generated by clicking the “Transparent Red Spray Paint” preset in the Tool Preset palette’s default set. Everything, including Mode, Opacity, Flow and the brush to be used are set by the tool preset.
Below is the Tool Presets palette with the brushes presets set loaded (found via the palette menu that is accessed by clicking the little arrow in the upper right corner of the palette). Each of these presets will not only choose a particular brush preset, they will jump to the proper tool and set all other options bar settings for that tool.
tool presets palette
For example, if I currently have the move tool selected, clicking one of the paintbrush presets in the Tool Presets palette will select the paintbrush in the toolbox and enter all of the settings on its options bar. You can’t do that with the Brushes palette. It is entirely grayed out when you are using the move tool.
If you set this up with all the tools you use for a particular kind of work, it can be a major time saver.
There is one thing you need to remember when using tool presets. As I already said, they reset your options bar. You need to remember that it has been reset. I have been caught more than once with the wrong blend mode, opacity or flow setting because I forgot that the tool preset changed them from their usual settings of Normal and 100 %.

If you want to get some interesting ideas for making your own brushes, load the Brushes group in the Tool Presets palette (using the palette menu). Click on a brush, try it, and if you like it, click on each tab in the Brushes palette to see how it has been set up. Also notice the settings on the paintbrush’s options bar for that brush. There are some very interesting brushes in the set.

As promised, I have a follow-up tutorial that goes with this one that will show you some techniques for using brushes if you aren’t a natural painter.
