How Much?

page three
I decided I’d like to give the trees the adjustment which results from the lighter shade of the two grays (the band second from the right) and would like to leave the sky with no adjustment at all.
I made a selection around the trees using the lasso tool, and Quick Mask. Your selection doesn’t have to be perfect, as you’ll see in a moment, but it is good to make it reasonably close to what you want.
With the selection active, Alt-click on the adjustment layer mask. As before, use the eyedropper to pick up the desired shade of gray. I clicked on the lighter of the two shades of gray, then pressed Alt-Backspace to fill the selection with that tone.

With the selection still active, press Shift-Ctrl-I to inverse the selection (or use Select > Inverse), press the D key on your keyboard to return your colors to the default black and white, and then press Alt-Backspace to fill the inverse selection with black. Press Alt and click on the adjustment layer mask to see your image.
Filling the sky area of the mask with black removes all of the Levels adjustment from that part of the image.
If you look at the resulting image, shown below, you’ll see that this looks really awful. The transition between the two areas is terrible since the sky is visible through the leaves of the trees, around which I did not make a tight selection.
Not to worry. This is to be expected. While you could have applied a feather to the selection before filling the mask with the different tones of gray, I find it easier and better to retouch afterward, using the airbrush, or a gaussian blur. I’ll show you how, next.
