Combining Images III

page three
Duplicate the background (bottle) layer and drag it above the woman’s layer in the Layers palette. Set its blend mode to Multiply, and put its layer opacity at 30 %. The blend mode menu is in the upper left corner of the Layers palette, and the opacity slider is in the upper right corner.
Now, she’s dark enough, but the coffee and the salt are taking over the picture. You need to make her face more visible.

Add a Levels adjustment layer to the top of the Layers stack. Do this by first clicking on the topmost layer in the Layers palette. New layers are added above the currently selected layer.
Click on the Create New Adjustment Layer button at the bottom of the Layers palette (the black and white circle) and choose Levels from the menu.
In the Levels dialog, change the white Input Levels value to be 215. Leave the others where they are.
Input Levels
With the adjustment layer still selected in the Layers palette, press the D key to make sure the default mask edit colors are showing (white for foreground, black for background). Then choose the gradient tool in the toolbox. On its options bar, make sure Reverse is not checked, and choose the Radial option (PS 7 has these new, color icons).
radial gradient
With the gradient tool, click in the middle of the woman’s face (on her nose) and drag straight to the left, releasing the mouse button when you get to the edge of the picture. The radial gradient on the adjustment layer mask will gradually remove the Levels adjustment from everywhere except the woman’s face.
You can see the final Layers palette with the masked Levels adjustment, below. The final image is at the bottom of this section.

This technique works for anything transparent, including water, and see-through fabrics.
