To open the Curves dialog box, choose Layer > New > Adjustment Layer, and choose Curves from the dialog box’s menu.

Below is the screen shot of the curve I used. Ctrl-clicking in the image will place a point on the curve which corresponds to the spot you clicked on. Do this for tones you don’t want to change. That will anchor them. Then add points to other parts of the curve, and play with them. With Preview checked, you can see if you get an effect you like..

The fourth dot from the bottom is bumped up (up and left) just the tiniest bit. You would be amazed at how much of a difference that little change makes. Once a dot is selected, you can use the arrow keys to manipulate it.
