Quick Mask

page five
Mask complete—perfect selection created. Once the mask was exactly against the banana, I simply clicked the Standard mode button which is just left of the Quick mask button. You can go back and forth if you need to.
If you ever find yourself half way through making an elaborate quick mask, and suddenly realize that you don’t have time to finish, you can save your document while it is in Quick Mask mode, and it will still be in Quick Mask Mode when you reopen.
Or, you can click the Standard Mode button to load your partially completed mask, and choose Select > Save Selection. This will save the mask as an alpha channel, which you can access, and edit via the Channels palette. Editing a channel is the same as editing a quick mask.

  1. The Standard mode and Quick mask buttons.
  2. It’s usually a good idea to feather a selection at least a tiny bit when working with photographs. This avoids making a hard division between the changed and unchanged areas. On the menu bar, choose Select > Feather. 2-3 pixels can be fine, though sometimes you may want to use a lot more to blend the old with the new.
  3. Having labored to create the perfect selection, you may want to save it. By going to the Channels palette and clicking this button, the Save Selection button, you can create an alpha channel which stores your selection. Or you can choose Select > Save Selection to create the alpha channel. To reload the selection at a later time, select that alpha channel and click the Load Channel button which is the leftmost button at the bottom of the Channels palette or choose Select > Load Selection, and pick your new alpha channel from the menu. Alpha channels can be edited with the painting tools in the same way as the quick mask.
Please note that you must convert your Quick Mask to a Standard selection before saving it. Quick Masks cannot be saved. The Save Selection option in the menu will be grayed out until you convert the Quick Mask to a standard selection by clicking the button just to the left of the Quick Mask button in the toolbox.
  4. You can see your saved mask/selection here. Instead of transparent red, it is black but otherwise it is the same as the other mask. By double-clicking on the channel, it can be added to and subtracted from by painting with black and white. You can also use various opacities if you want to get fancy.
  5. The selected bananas. Now that I have them selected what can I do with them? Some people like their bananas yellow.
