In the default arrangement, this one will be second from the top in your column of palettes. If the Styles palette is hidden behind the Color, or Swatches palettes, click on its title tab to bring it to the front, or choose Window > Styles.

Styles are groups of layer effects that can be saved, and applied over, and over again. The Styles palette acts as a library of default, and custom styles. The styles shown in the palette are also the styles that will show in the pop-up menu of the options bar for tools that use styles.

Layer effects that may be a part of a style include Drop Shadow, Inner Shadow, Outer Glow, Inner Glow, Bevel and Emboss, Satin, Color, Gradient and Pattern Overlay, and Stroke. These individual effects are difficult to describe verbally. I recommend you try them out on a sample image. Choose Layer > Layer Style to find the menu.

A style may be applied to the currently selected layer by clicking on the desired style in the Styles palette. You can also drag the desired style from the Styles palette onto the layer you want to apply it to in the Layers palette. If you have already applied other layer effects to the active layer, you can preserve those that are not duplicated in the style by holding down the Shift key as you apply the new style.

Styles can be edited and applied by many means other than the Styles palette. The palette serves as a visual aid to show which styles are available. The pop-up menus used elsewhere to apply them can only be seen when tools which use styles are in use.

Find more detailed information on many other aspects of styles in the Styles page. For extensive information on each of the many layer effects, and advanced blending modes, please see the Reference: Effects section.

Please note that palettes which are in the palette well will not stay open while you edit. To bring a palette out of the well, click on its name tab and drag it out.

Note that the same style applied to documents with different resolutions will probably look very different since most of the settings are relative to resolution. If you resize a document that already contains styles, use Layer > Layer Style > Scale Effects to make the applied style look the same at the new size.

The illustration on the left, below, shows the Styles palette with numbers added to the bottom. Clicking icon #1 will remove, or clear any style from the currently selected layer. Button #2 will create a New Style from the effects which have been added to the currently selected layer. Number three is the delete, or trash button.

On the right below, is the palette menu accessed by clicking on the arrow in the upper, right corner of the palette. Here you can change the way the thumbnail samples are shown in the palette, or load a different set of styles.
